An Island Between Us is an ongoing photographic project born in French Polynesia where i live for few years. It explores insularity as a geographical, social and intimate experience, and the ways in which a territory separated from the wider world can shape those who inhabit it.
Living on an island means negotiating distance, geographical limits, the repetition of everyday life and a particular relationship to time. Yet an island is never entirely isolated: it is also crossed by the outside world, its influences, images, ways of life and transformations.
Through portraits, everyday scenes, details and landscapes, I am interested in social relationships as well as in the more intimate states that run through island life. Boredom, waiting, habits, gatherings, alcohol and the role of religion appear as different manifestations of this experience of insularity.
I seek to convey what insularity produces in bodies, habits, relationships and imaginaries, and how it shapes our relationship to time, to others, to the territory and to the world beyond.
