When I photographed Cuba, I became interested not only in what I was seeing, but in what it might feel like to live there.
I began to imagine what it could mean to live in a place where a sense of confinement might become part of everyday life, where the possibility of leaving or changing one’s life could feel distant.I chose to transform the colours of my photographs into soft pastel tones, creating a different vision of the world around me. It became a way of changing the reality I was seeing, transforming my surroundings into something more beautiful, more dreamlike, almost as if I could create another world within it.
For me, this transformation also became a way of imagining how one might create a dream around oneself in order to live with a reality that cannot easily be changed.I was drawn to the idea of a lost dream too. The hope that things might change, that another future might become possible, and the feeling that this hope can slowly fade with time.
Through these images, I wanted to explore the space between reality and the world we create in our imagination, between what surrounds us and what we choose to see.
